Councillor Penny Pedersen was elected to City of Ryde Council in 2017 and has worked hard for her community since. Forming warm and respectful relationships across the local government area with local organisations, individuals and neighbouring councillors.

Since joining council, with the support of a Labor led council 2017-2021 she has personally initiated the following projects:

  • The construction of sandstone steps and water testing to develop the Putney Park swim site
  • The construction of new amenities and landscaping at Heatly reserve in East Ryde
  • Safe pedestrian access alongside Pittwater road outside Field of Mars and completion of the shared cycle path.
  • City of Ryde mural program and the Illuminatrope sculpture placement in looking glass bay
  • Introduction of a youth ambassador program and public speaking workshop.
  • Annual youth battle of the Bands.
  • The development of a City of Ryde Reconciliation Action Plan. 
  • Membership in Greater Sydney womens safety charter community of practice
  • A guide for business and residents on installing electric vehicle chargers.
  • Strengthened the significant tree register and City of Ryde sustainable procurement policies
  • Tools workshop supporting women interested in a career in trades or engineering.
  • Workshops on re-usable nappies.
  • Childminding for community advisory work groups.
  • Community road safety meetings at schools
  • Road safety study and traffic design at Boronia Park village.
  • Campaign to fix pedestrian Traffic signals at Cox’s and Wicks road intersection.
  • Kiss and Ride parking changes at East Ryde Public school.
  • Campaign to keep cats out of natural areas
  • A fence around the childrens playground at Pidding park. 
  • Introduced free Pet minding for DV victims
  • March and ongoing campaign against Domestic and family violence
 

She and the Labor team achieved amazing things together over the last 5 years including:

  • 100% Renewable Energy Target and Climate emergency declaration
  • Zero emissions target and pathway to zero modelling
  • Introduction of biodiversity protection zones and protection of endangered urban forest
  • Electric Vehicle fleet and 3 new Charging stations
  • Zero litter to river target
  • LED street lighting across the city
  • Banned single use plastics in Council operations
  • extended the Ryde Riverwalk 
  • Civic Centre redevelopment
  • New Rowe Street Carpark in Eastwood
  • 25km of new footpaths and cycleways
  • 150km of new roads 
  • Sea wall upgrades at Meadowbank, Putney and Morrison Bay
  • 15 Playgrounds rebuilt
  • Expansion of Blenheim Park 
  • New Park at Kings Park Denistone East
  • Meadowbank Skate Park
  • Masterplans for Gannon, Meadowbank, Magdala and Westminster parks.
  • Upgrade to Coxs road shopping precinct 
  • Upgrades to North Ryde school of arts
  • Strong and balanced financial record
  • $400 COVID rebate for ratepayers
  • $2000 Small business support grant
  • Waived sports, outdoor dining and business fees during the pandemic
  • Reduced waste levy charge
  • 10 days domestic violence leave for victims of domestic and family violence.

Penny has chaired numerous community advisory committees here in Ryde and represented Ryde as:

  • Vice President of Northern Regional Organisation of councils
  • Vice chair of the Parramatta River Catchment group
  • Executive – Australian Local government womens association

And represented local government in NSW:

  • Board director of Local government NSW 
  • NSW Music Festival Round table
  • The climate council’s Cities Power Partnership local leaders program. 

She is also a member of the Ryde /Hunters Hill Domestic and Family Violence committee and a member of the Ryde Side by Side Inclusive Governance Consultative Reference Group.

Clr Pedersen studied Theatre at UNSW and has had a long career as a performer, writer and producer. She has worked in film, television, theatre, radio, education, journalism and freelance presenting, also serving as a board member for Griffin Theatre Company and Northside radio 99.3FM. She is passionate about her local community, the environment, social inclusion and women's issues.

Outside of council and her work Cr Pedersen is a registered wildlife rescuer, carer, keen photographer and kayaker.
